Norman Rockwell’s Portrait of Huckleberry Finn
The Phoenix Art Museum is home to Norman Rockwell’s Portrait of Huckleberries Finn. This iconic illustration of the classic book was painted in 1939. The painting is a sketch that he originally created as an idea. The story was originally published in 1876, and a 1940 reprint by Heritage Press includes masterpieces by Rockwell.
The exhibition is organized by the Norman Rockwell Museum and is accompanied by a book that provides a comprehensive analysis of Rockwell’s life and works. The publication contains a wealth of information on Rockwell and his artwork, and it includes over 80 high-quality color plates. It also features reproductions of archival photographs.
Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $4 for children ages six to 17, and free for children under six. Free Fridays are Oct. 3, 17, and 24, and are open from noon to 7 p.m. Groups of 10 or more can schedule a guided tour at least five weeks in advance.
“Idealizing America: Norman Rockwell and Irving Berlin” is a lecture/musical performance event at 7 p.m. on Oct. 10. The show explores how art and music relate to American issues. The performance will feature a local voice and piano duo. Hosted by Michael Lasser, the lecture costs $10 or $7 for members.
John Mix Stanley’s Chain of Spires Along the Gila River
Chain of Spires Along the Gila is an excellent example of a landscape painted by John Mix Stanley. This painting depicts the Gila River in Arizona. John Mix Stanley was an artist who had been drawn to the American Indians and interested in painting them. His interest in this culture led him to settle in Fort Gibson, now Oklahoma, where there was a constant stream of travelers. He was granted permission to paint the Indians at large councils and was also able to participate in these gatherings. Eventually, Stanley established a gallery in Cincinnati and began public exhibitions of his Indian portraits.
